Fugen-in Temple is located almost in the center of Koyasan. It is said that the temple was founded in the Taiji era (12th century) when Prince Kakuo climbed Koyasan and gave the Bodhisattva Fugen, which he kept as a guardian Buddha, to Rikijo Shonin. As the name of the temple suggests, the principal image is the Bodhisattva Fugen. It was created by Kegonji Michio, one of the ten greatest disciples of Kobo Daishi, and it is said that Kobo Daishi instilled the image in his eye.
