Thanks to the Koyasan Shukubo association i got the perfect room to stay in Koyasan. They were very helpful and answered all of my questions quickly. We had our own house with bath which was stunning. We didnt have a curfew like most temples which made it easy to explore okunoin by night.

The room we had was very clean, and came with a yukata, towels, Japanese style room, air conditioning. The temple staff were very kind and spoke English well enough for us to communicate our needs and when our plans changed. They keep to a schedule for breakfast and dinner and ask that you arrive at specific times in order to receive those meals. There are two separate baths for men and women. There aren't many instructions on how to behave or how to use facilities so you may need to speak with them if you're uncertain. It's a very quiet and serene place, and the guests seem to naturally adhere to the quietude of the monks. An example of the schedule is included below. The onsen is also a lovely feature to have included and especially nice after a long day. There is no bathroom included in the room we had.

Staff couldn't have been better. They were helpful and nice and treated everyone kindly. They also cleaned up immediately after crazy guest's messes. 10/10 Beautiful outdoors, views, indoors. I, sadly, really disliked the food but I think it is a personal preference. 100% recommend.

This was truly a unique experience, one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Shojoshin-in exceeded our expectations. The hospitality was superb, the grounds are so beautiful and the room was nice and cozy. I only wish we knew the schedule ahead of time so we could plan to attend the fire ceremony (scheduled at 1:00pm)...

This ancient area has a sense of antiquity in its architecture, furnishings, gardens, and culture. The presence of the secret Buddha adds to the mystical atmosphere. 2. The level of instruction at Aji Guan seems to vary slightly from one monastery to another, so it depends on your affinity. 3. The entire complex sees many visitors from non-Asian countries, and Sakuraike-in Temple has an English-speaking chaplain (or monk?). 4. The half-board menu consists of dinner and breakfast, and the ingredients are local, delicious, and entirely vegetarian. 5. An evening stroll through Okunoin is quite enjoyable. The tombstones and forests are quite charming at night.

Great temple stay that I highly recommend !

We literally loved everything. We had a very spacious room with a nice view. The host/monk was very friendly and it was a real pleasure to join the morning prayer. Dinner was very nice and so was the breakfast. We were also very pleased by the nice welcome tea. The bath was also very nice. We were a bit sad that we stayed only 1 night. Can highly recommend; we are very grateful that we could have this nice experience.

It was curious and nice to be in a temple lodging, but compared to other type of accomodations in Japan, we found it a bit more uncomfortable. The room was traditional Japanese with futons. The futons were way too thin, you could feel the floor. Carpets and other parts of the facilities were quite dated. It was nice and convenient to have a private WC and shower in the room. We love Japanese food but didn't enjoy food here so much. There was plenty, but tempura was cold the rest was a bit tasteless. Boiled eggs and bananas were an extra on sale, considering the price paid, I'd have expected more. Some minor renovation and maintenance would improve the experience. Overall I'd still recommend it as an experience for one night, yet I find it a bit pricey for what you get.

We have been assigned to Sanbo-in since there were no places in our first choices, and it was a really great stay. We've been so grateful to be hosted in such sacred place, the monks have been really kind to us. The temple is beautiful, what I really loved was the back garden. The room was quite simple with not a great view, but the experience to be hosted in a temple like that, to pray in the morning, to live a bit of this life were the the most important things we appreciated the most.
