Enjoy a special and relaxing time while immersing yourself in history and tradition and experiencing the hospitality that only a temple stay in Koyasan can provide.
Ekoin Temple was founded 1200 years ago when Kobo Daishi Kukai built a five-story pagoda and enshrined Bishamonten and Acala. Later, Kukai's disciple Dosho Sozu became the chief priest and held memorial services for many people, which led to the temple being called Ekoin. In 1308, Ryocho Ajari was transferred from Toji Temple in Kyoto to the temple and restored Ekoin Temple, and at the beginning of the Eiroku era (1558-), the temple developed a deep relationship with Shimazu Hyogo no Kami Yoshihiro, the 17th head of the Satsuma clan, and became a patron. It is also the family temple of Akechi Mitsuhide. During the Hoei era (1704~), by order of the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, the temple was renamed "Ekoin" and its teachings have been passed down uninterrupted to the present day.
